The Fédération Interprofessionnelle de la Vape (Fivape) has just published a press release in which it opposes the proposals of the National Committee Against Smoking (CNCT) regarding the advertising of new tobacco and nicotine products. Among these proposals is the ban on flavourings in e-liquids, which could have dramatic consequences for public health if they were included in the National Plan for Tobacco Control (NLMP).

Since arriving in France 10 years ago, vape has become the French' favorite smoking cessation tool. Every day, it allows 4 million French women and men to stay away from tobacco, directly contributing to the reduction in the number of deaths related to smoking. According to the Cochrane review, vaping is the most effective weaning tool, ahead of traditional substitutes.
The scientific consensus about the benefits of vaping to quit smoking is not taken into account by the NCWC, which favours an ineffective ideology, stigmatizing smokers rather than helping them to wean themselves from tobacco. The proposals put forward in the NTCC report, if implemented, would undo the 10-year effort to reduce smoking. The most worrisome of these is the call for a ban on flavourings in vape products on the grounds that they would be an entry point into smoking.

Yet, all the serious studies conducted around the world over the past 10 years show that there is no bridge effect between vaping and conventional cigarettes. In addition, the variety of flavours is a central decision-making factor in the approach to smoking cessation through vaping, but also a factor in maintaining motivation. Reducing flavors to the "tobacco flavor" alone would be counterproductive: how to ask smokers to stop smoking by allowing them only the flavor they are trying to get rid of?

These proposals are made under the guise of better protection for minors. However, they have been strictly prohibited from selling vaping products since 2016. Banning flavours would therefore target products that directly and effectively help the 4 million vapers, and could help the remaining 13 million smokers get out of tobacco.

The 8,000 vaping professionals who work every day to help smokers know that the diversity of flavours is an essential factor in stopping smoking through vaping. It is vital that we hear them at a time when cigarette consumption is on the rise. That is why Fivape is asking to meet with the Minister of Health to find solutions .
